The Surrender Novena |

I found out about this novena at the National Catholic Singles Conference, when the priest who said the masses mentioned it in one of his homilies. It comes from Fr. Dolindo Ruotolo, who is currently a candidate for beatification. Fr. Dolindo was a friend and spiritual director of Padre Pio. I have been saying the novena since I returned from the NCSC. It is part of my effort to turn my dating life over to Jesus. Is anyone else familiar with this novena? If so, what was your experience?

The Shroud of Turin |

The Shroud has been reexamined using more current technology than in 1988, where they used carbon dating and said it most likely dated back to 1350. This time they say that it is just about 2000 years old putting it right about the time of the resurrection. They say that the technique is experimental, but this should open the door for further testing. Wouldn't that be something if they found the DNA of Christ on it after all these years?
Here's a link I found if you want more info. Foxnews.com/shroud

National public data breach |

They recently announce a massive data breach where there were over 2.9 billion listings of personal data. There is a website that you can check to see if you were breached and I'll guarantee you that you were. I saw my name a number of times at several addresses that I lived or worked at plus PO box addresses where I got mail. This included birth dates, phone numbers and SS numbers. From what I read, they tried to sell the info on the dark web for a million dollars, but had no takers so they released it free. Very scary. To check how many times you were listed, go to Pentester
BTW, you can look up anyone that you want as long as you have their birth year. My search showed over a dozen entries for myself and a bunch for others with similar names. This including the last two digits of my SSN, which were correct in every case as were phone numbers and addresses.
I'm sure there are many other breaches that have our personal info in, the Internet has made it very cushy for the criminals and I haven't a clue how to deal with it. Right now I have a letter from AT&T about a breach and I haven't dealt with them in decades, but they still had my personal info in their database.

Calendar |

We do have a calendar that members can use to post events. We do list birthdays of those who provide us with that info, but it is open for anyone to post an upcoming event. Each day is limited to four events, so it's first come, first serve, not that we expect a lot. But if you have anything that you'd like us to know is happening in your area or even a worldwide event, post it there as well as opening a thread.
Just click on "Calendar" at the top action bar and below this month's calendar is a choice to either "add a public event" or "add a private event".

Church history of Roman(aka Latin) Catholic priests and marriage |

Roman Catholic Church history - Popes and priests in the Roman Catholic Church were no longer allowed to marry starting in the 11 Century, and priestly celibacy was required.
Today, if you look, there are married Catholic priests, married with children, coming to the Roman Catholic Church from the Episcopal church, a pastoral provision from the late Pope John Paul II.
What do you think? Do you think Roman Catholic Priests should be allowed to marry again as it's part of Church history?

Respect before mass |

I go to the 7:00 AM mass at St. Clements in Sun City. I live in a different parish, but there, going to mass was like being in a social gathering, folks moving around to talk, even babies in carriages being pushed around. That is a carryover from when the church was in a temporary building and where we even had to contend with the band practicing before mass (drums, guitars, brass). That's why we registered at a different parish, which is OK with the diocese, it's about a 20 minute drive but that's fine because folks there respect the sanctity of the church, maybe an occasional whisper or handshake greeting a familiar face. As you can guess, most at mass are up in age, I sit in back and see a sea of white hair. If there's a family of young people they're sure to be visiting the grandparents.
Yesterday, one such family of four came in and sat next to two older folks, very typical until the mother reached in her purse and pulled out a Starbucks and started sucking on it. Then the girl who appeared to be around 20 and was wearing super-short and very tight pants started on her cell phone, she'd type stuff, put it down, type some more, I'm not sure for how long because I turned away.
My question, is this the new norm for how we act when we go to mass? No respect for God and the presence of Jesus, not even dressed appropriately. It doesn't seem right, mass is not a social event like a concert. What's your take of this activity before mass, is it prevalent in your parish? Am I living in the past?
Needless to say, I'm upset how they acted before mass at the church I no longer attend mass at, but more so how this family seemed to have no dignity to the presence of the Holy Spirit, and do they act this way at their home parish?
